In August of 2004 the State of New Jersey passed the Highlands Act. In December 2006, the NJ DEP published the final rules that apply to everyone who lives or will ever live in the Highlands. These rules make some properties only usable for walking but a permit is needed if one wants to make a walking trail. The homes on some properties will not be expandable, many businesses will not be able to expand or upgrade their infrastructure and some farmers will not be able to replace their buildings. Lastly, existing communities can see their zoning patterns changed to a minimum of 5 houses per acre and possibly, high rise apartments in town centers. We are fighting this act as a violation of The Bill of Rights. We are not against watershed preservation or balanced environmentalism. We believe that if the citizens of New Jersey need additional water, then their water providers should honor the American way and buy the land that they need. Likewise, if there is a need to protect forest and species, then the land needed should be bought for these public purposes.
